Best picture quality 1080p TVs - Winter 2017
Reviews

1080p TVs are soon to be a thing of the past. Manufacturers are pretty quickly stopping the release of newer 1080p models - if they do release any, they’ll be budget models. Anything on the high end is going to be 4K (see our 4k vs 1080p TV comparison).

The Sony W630B is the best 1080p LED TV we’ve tested this year.

It handles motion and input lag very well so the TV is good for both sports and video games. It has nice even blacks and good contrast which makes it pretty good for watching movies or TV in a darker room. Unfortunately, its viewing angle is quite small, so it might be an issue if watched from the side. Minding that, this is the best 1080p LED TV available now.

If you really need something cheap, and performance beyond the TV being functional is less important to you, the TCL FS3800 is the one to get.

It doesn’t perform especially well in any aspect but besides the very narrow viewing angles, it doesn’t have any major flaws. Its Roku smart platform is great which makes accessing content easy. The best thing about the TCL FS3800 though, is the incredible price.

If you’re looking for a 1080p TV as cheap as possible without any major compromise, the FS3800 series is what you should look for.

Note: The FS3750 is another model from TCL available in different sizes and performs similarly, so it is also a good choice if you need something larger.

Our recommendations above are what we think are currently the best HDR TVs to buy for most people. We factor in the price (a cheaper TV wins over a pricier one if the difference isn't really worth it), feedback from our visitors and availability (no TVs that are difficult to find or almost out of stock everywhere).

A few examples of 1080p TVs that didn't make the cut:

  • Samsung K6250. Newer model with a better design but worse performance than the Samsung J6200 overall. See our review
  • Samsung J6300. Out of stock pretty much everywhere now. See our review
  • Sony W650D. Overall performance is poor, Samsung J6200 is a much better performer for the same price. See our review
  • TCL FS3750. Not much different from the FS3800, but is usually slightly more expensive. It can however be found at larger sizes. See our review

If you would like to do the work of choosing yourself, here is the list of all our reviews of TVs that have a 1080p screen. Be careful to not get too caught up in the details. While no TV is perfect, most TVs are great enough to please almost everyone and the differences are often not noticeable unless you really look for them.

Sharp television name is being licensed by the Chinese TV maker Hisense, will you be carrying Hisense in Sharp's place?
When doing reviews I noticed that 1080p overall review number is always lower than a 4K is that because you are comparing 4K to 1080p? I am not here to criticize the reviewing I am just kind of curious. I am here to go with the flow it's nice that you do what you do.
Maybe next year we will start covering Hisense, but it depends if we get enough requests for it.
Indeed, 4k TVs score higher in our tests for 2 reasons:
1) There are no high end 1080p TVs anymore, so even the best 1080p TV (like the Samsung J6300 or Vizio E Series) have a worse picture quality overall for 1080p content than the best 4k TVs.
2) Just the fact that a TV is 4k gets a boost of 2.3% in the overall score (via Movies->Resolution->4k, see our score formula). The resolution is a component of picture quality (assuming you have native content of course), which is why it is part of our scores.

In your opinion, do 4K televisions have superior picture quality to 1080p televisions for content from DVDs? Though we use a Blu-ray player, the majority of movies we play are DVDs, and based on customer comments I am concerned that the picture quality on a 4k television will not be as good as a 1080p TV. Any difference in viewing angles between 4k and non-4k sets? Thanks.
It's down to the hardware and software in the TV. Some 1080p TVs will be better at upscaling than some 4k TVs, and the reverse is also true.
The viewing angle does not depend on the resolution of the TV, but rather on the type of panel used. Of the three main kinds of panel, OLED panels have the widest viewing angles, followed by IPS LED panels, and then VA LED panels.

When you are done testing/reviewing the televisions, do you put them up for sale locally or online? By the way great site- very informative.
We sell them locally, and we're based in Montreal, Canada.

What about the 7150?
Assuming you are referring to the Samsung H7150, it is discontinued and out of stock almost everywhere now.
