There's a lot of good choices below $1,500; you can get some of the best TVs in sizes up to 65". Here are the TVs we recommend:
Best picture quality under $1,500
If you're not looking to spend over $1,500, the Samsung UN55KS8500 is the TV most people should buy.
The UN55KS8500 is recommended so often, and it isn’t without reason: it’s extraordinarily versatile, has great contrast and blacks, low motion blur, and little input lag. Its only real shortcomings are the fairly narrow viewing angles and the slightly sub-par build quality. Otherwise, it’s an exceptional 4k TV that offers great picture quality and is a good choice for most people.
We usually recommend its flat cousin, the UN55KS8000, but it's pretty much discontinued at this point. Performance is about the same, so if you find it, pick whichever you prefer.
Best value for size under $1,500
If you’re looking for good value in this price range, look for the Vizio M65-D0. It offers a great image in a dark environment thanks to the very good local dimming feature that is very similar to the higher end Vizio P Series 2016.
Like every other Vizio TV, it’s not the best for lower resolution content. Nevertheless, it’s still the best choice for a larger sized TV under the $1,500 line.
The Samsung UN70KU6300 is a popular 4K TV; it doesn’t have any glaring flaws and is great value for money. It does better than average in our picture quality tests except for the viewing angles being a bit on the narrow side. Unfortunately, it has judder on every source, but not everybody notices it.
If you want the biggest TV you can get under $1500, the UN70KU6300 is the right alternative to the Vizio.
Our recommendations above are what we think are currently the best TVs under $1,500 to buy for most people. We factor in the price (a cheaper TV wins over a pricier one if the difference isn't worth it), feedback from our visitors and availability (no TVs that are difficult to find or almost out of stock everywhere).
A few examples of TVs under $1,500 that didn't make the cut:
- Vizio P55-C1. Contrary to the other sizes of the Vizio P, the 55 inch TV has an IPS panel, which means worse native contrast ratio, but better viewing angle. See our review
- Samsung UN55KS9000. Great TV, but not much different than the KS8000 for the price premium. See our review
- LG 55UH8500. Good 4k TV for its picture quality at an angle, but poor blacks in a dark room. See our review
If you would like to do the work of choosing yourself, here is the list of all our reviews of TVs that are less than $1,500. Be careful not to get too caught up in the details. While no TV is perfect, most TVs are great enough to please almost everyone, and the differences are often not noticeable unless you really look for them.
